What Are the Santos Populares?

The Santos Populares are traditional Portuguese celebrations honoring three Catholic saints:

  • Santo António (Saint Anthony) – celebrated in Lisbon on June 13th
  • São João (Saint John) – celebrated in Porto on June 24th
  • São Pedro (Saint Peter) – celebrated across Portugal on June 29th

While their origins are religious, today these festivals are famous for bringing communities together through food, music, dancing, and street celebrations.

🎉 Santos Populares in Lisbon

Lisbon celebrates Santo António, the patron saint of the city. During the first half of June, neighborhoods such as Alfama, Mouraria, Graça, and Bairro Alto are transformed into vibrant open-air parties.

Visitors can enjoy grilled sardines on charcoal grills, traditional Portuguese music, popular marches, dancing, colorful decorations, traditional food and drinks, and the famous Marchas Populares parade along Avenida da Liberdade.

The night of June 12th is the biggest celebration of the year in Lisbon, attracting thousands of locals and tourists who fill the historic streets until dawn.

🎆 São João in Porto

Porto hosts one of Europe's most memorable street festivals: São João. On the night of June 23rd, people gather across the city for fireworks over the Douro, street concerts, plastic-hammer traditions, lanterns, grilled sardines and celebrations that continue until sunrise.

🐟 The Star of the Festival: Sardines

No symbol is more closely associated with Santos Populares than the humble sardine. During June, the aroma of sardines grilling over charcoal fills the streets of Lisbon, Porto, and towns across Portugal.
